Speculations on the W-mass measurement at CDF*

Abstract The W mass determination at the Tevatron CDF experiment reported a deviation from SM expectation 7 σ level. We discuss few possible interpretations and their collider implications. perform electroweak global fits under various frameworks assumptions. consider three types of in effective-field-theory framework: S - T , eight-parameter flavor-universal one. amounts tensions between different m_W measurements reflected these corresponding shifts central values parameters. With fit pictures hand, we present classes models compatibility with results. find that while explaining discrepancy, single gauge boson extensions face strong LHC direct search constraints unless Z' is fermiophobic (leptophobic), which can be realized if extra vector fermions (leptons) mix (leptons). Vector-like top partners partially generate needed shift to observables. squark also studied detail. non-degenerate soft masses enhance operator coefficients, enabling an allowed explanation compatible current measurements. Overall, more theoretical experimental developments are highly demand reveal physics behind this discrepancy.
